Call for papers

Proposals are invited for presentations that use postcolonial theory to engage with cultures, texts, traditions, teachings, rituals and/or practices in one of the following areas:

  • Politics
  • Religions
  • Scriptures

Sharada Sugirtharajah, Senior Lecturer in Hindu Studies, Department of Theology and Religion at University of Birmingham (follow link to further information), is author of Imagining Hinduism: A Postcolonial Perspective (Routledge 2003, link to review) and Religious Pluralism and the Modern World: An Ongoing Engagement with John Hick (MacMillan Palgrave 2012, link to synopsis) and other publications on women issues, interreligious relations, and disaporic Hinduism.

R. S. Sugirtharajah, Professor of Biblical Hermeneutics, Department of Theology and Religion at University of Birmingham (follow link to further information) author of The Bible and Asia: From the Pre-Christian Era to the Postcolonial Age (Harvard University Press 2013, link to review), Exploring Postcolonial Biblical Criticism: History, Method, Practice (Blackwell 2012) and many works on biblical and postcolonial criticism.

SFC Research Seminars

The SFC Research Seminars provide an avenue for Honours students, Masters students, and doctoral candidates to participate in a forum where faculty are presenting their own current work while also modelling good research and writing practice. These seminars are held three times each academic semester, and are open to clergy and members of the wider community.

These seminars are held in Lecture Room 1 (directly below the Roscoe Library), between 2.00pm and 5.00pm on the dates listed below.

Gospel Responses to Vital Issues Facing the Melanesian World in the 21st Century: Biblical, Theological, Missiological

The Melanesian Association of Theological Schools 2014 conference and meeting of educators and postgraduate students from the theological schools of Melanesia will be held at the Christian Leaders’ Training College, Banz campus (near Mt. Hagen), from 7 to 10 July. The conference begins at 6 p.m. on Monday, 7 July, and concludes at 9 p.m. on Thursday, 10 July. Griffith Climate Change Public Seminar–The Role of Faith in Climate Change Adaptation

Summary: This presentation explores the role faith plays in supporting climate change adaptation. This will be examined from two perspectives. First, faith will be examined as a personal motivator to face challenges, strengthen resilience and maintain persistence in work. Second, faith as an institution will be examined as an important contributor to resilient communities and policy making. This discussion will also include the presentation of a deliberative democratic framework of nine principles to facilitate in infusion of faith perspectives in climate change decision making.

The Australian Academy of Humanities’ 2013 Symposium will be hosted by the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies,The University of Queensland. The symposium will explore the ways in which the humanities are vital to understanding the way communities deal with environmental change. The event will feature 14 speakers and panelists, including Professor Iain McCalman whose award-winning work Darwin’s Armada (Penguin, 2009) was the basis of the TV series, Darwin’s Brave New World. The Question of Nature will showcase some of the most exciting scholarship in the environmental humanities. For more information please visit www.humanities.org.au

Call for Papers: Society of Asian Biblical Studies

The 2014 meeting of the Society of Asian Biblical Studies will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 23 to 25 June. One of the principal objectives of SABS is to foster biblical scholarship and research in Asia that takes seriously the Asian context—its cultures, religions and methodologies. It is therefore imperative that papers presented at this meeting are attempts to understand the Bible from varied Asian perspectives.  Proposals for papers that deal with our theme of Violence in the Human and Earth Community – Asian Biblical Response will be especially welcome.
