Call for papers for Australia and New Zealand Association of Theological Schools conference in Adelaide, July 2020
We are very pleased to announce that the 2020 Conference will be held in conjunction with the International meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature. Opportunities to participate in an academic conference with a substantial number of international scholars is not common in Australia and New Zealand, so we are very excited by the prospect of meeting with ISBL. The possibility exists that ANZATS might be able to offer joint sessions with SBL in biblical and related fields. Apart from any joint sessions, ANZATS streams (in Bible, theology, history, theological education, and practical ministry) will run parallel to those of SBL.
There are nine ANZATS streams you might consider submitting a paper to. Proposal abstracts should be no more than 250 words in length and include your full name and academic title, institutional affiliation, and email address. We will require full papers in the New and Emerging Scholars streams. Anyone can present a paper in ANZATS sessions.
Proposals for each of the following streams should be sent directly to the coordinator listed below by Friday 13 December. This is far earlier than due dates for ANZATS conferences.
The program for ISBL with ANZATS will be finalised by SBL by the end of January 2020.

We are repeating the New and Emerging Scholars stream and will again be offering three scholarships worth $800 each to successful applicants. Applicants must show evidence that they are currently enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research course at a member institution of ANZATS or have completed their doctoral degree at a member institution within the last two years. Applicants should indicate in their covering email whether they would like to be considered for a scholarship. They should also attach an academic reference from their supervisor or employer.

Dr Cecily Jensen-Clayton – an afternoon of reflection on Australian mystical poetry, at the Women’s Theological Circle 2-4 pm on Friday 15 November
Dr Cecily Jensen-Clayton will lead an afternoon of reflection on Australian mystical poetry, and our own sensory experiences and moments of Divine Encounter in everyday life. Some theory around writing poetry and sensory levels of being will support this snapshot experience of Australian mystical poetry and writing ourselves as poets and mystics.

UQ seminar Friday November 22 2 – 4 pm on God’s Reconciling Action in Australia and Re-reading Scripture and Healing Trauma
UQ seminar is coming up on Friday November 22 (2-4pm in E319 in Forgan Smith). I’m looking forward to two very interesting papers. John Fitz-Herbert’s presentation in entitled, ‘Navigating the Deep Waters of God’s Reconciling Action in Australia: Tasks and Threats, Opportunities and Openings for the Christian Churches’. Cecily’s paper is entitled, ‘Re-reading Scripture and Healing Trauma’.

Nicholas Aroney is Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Queensland and a Fellow of the Centre for Law and Religion at Emory University. He has law degrees from the University of Queensland, a PhD from Monash University and he has held visiting positions at Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Edinburgh, Sydney, Emory and Tilburg universities.
He is the author of numerous articles and books on constitutional law, law and religion, and religious freedom, including The Constitution of a Federal Commonwealth (Cambridge, 2009), Shari’a in the West (Oxford, 2010) and The Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia: History, Principle and Interpretation (Cambridge, 2015). He is currently editing a book entitled, Christianity and Law, due for publication in 2020. In 2017-18 he served on the Prime Minister’s Religious Freedom Review Panel which submitted its report in May 2018.

UQ research seminar this Friday 27 September from 2pm to 4pm in E319 in Forgan Smith. At 2pm, Neil Pembroke is presenting a paper entitled, ‘A Spirit-Word-Community Hermeneutic for the “Preaching as Reimagination” Model’ (Respondent: Dave Benson). At 3pm Ray Reddicliffe will deliver a paper entitled, ‘Inter-disciplinary Dialogue between Theology and Philosophy: Buber’s Contribution to the Conversation’ (Respondent: Dean Smith).
Also, a member of our seminar group, Bruce Pass, has asked me to promote an open lecture at Brisbane School of Theology by Prof Nicholas Aroney entitled, ‘Theological Reflections on the Nature and Function of Law’. The flyer with all the details is attached.
UQ Theology seminar Friday September 27th – a Word-Spirit-Community hermeneutic & Martin Buber in Theology
The next UQ Theology seminar will be held on Friday September 27th 2pm to 4pm in the usual spot (E319 in Forgan Smith). It will feature Neil Pembroke and Ray Reddicliffe. Neil is presenting a paper on a Word-Spirit-Community hermeneutic in preaching that is aimed at reimagining our world (a la Brueggemann). Ray’s paper uses the thought of Martin Buber to reflect on the practice of integrating philosophical and biblical thought in constructing theologies. You are most welcome to attend.

Rob A. Fringer, PhD (Manchester) is Principal and Lecturer in Biblical Studies at Nazarene Theological College; he is also on the research faculty of Sydney College of Divinity, a Lecturer at Flinders University, and an honorary research fellow at the University of Queensland. He has written several articles and books, with his most recent book being Paul’s Corporate Christophany: An Evaluation of Paul’s Christophanic References in Their Epistolary Contexts.

Upcoming studies in religion seminar at UQ – A Spirit-Word-Community Hermeneutic for Brueggemann’s “Preaching as Reimagination” Model Presented by Associate Professor Neil Pembroke

Walter Brueggemann is a leading American scholar of the Bible and preacher. In this seminar, his idea of Spirit-led redescription of the world is developed through offering a Spirit-Word-Community approach to interpreting Scripture. Here ‘Word’ means the witness of the Bible, and ‘community’ encompasses the local faith community, the contemporary global community of faith, the tradition of biblical exegesis and theological reflection, and relevant thinkers in the non-theological community (psychologists, philosophers, sociologists, etc.).
