UQ Studies in Religion Seminars Antivaccine Persuasion and Religion: Distrust, Danger, and Confidence

Presented by Dr Tom Aechtner

This seminar will examine the persuasive attributes of Australian Vaccination-risks Network media. The AVN is Australia’s most active counter-vaccine lobby group, and one of its primary activities includes distributing messages critical of vaccines to the public. This seminar will identify key persuasion elements found in such antivaccine media, and pinpoint three overarching themes of AVN messaging. These themes are described as Distrust, Danger, and Confidence. References to religion within these themes will be identified, and overall findings will be considered in relation to Australian vaccine hesitancies and the country’s No Jab No Pay/Play policies.
